Good point, oompa. It's a total C.Y.A. move.
If you read Proverbs chapter 4 in its entirety and with an open mind, there's no way you could conclude that verse 18 is talking about changes in doctrine.
the failing prophecies, ever changing rules and regulations, new light, etc... waddya think?.

maybe i'm being influenced by all the "conspiracy nutters" on this board, but what if.... ...what if the society is planning some sort of huge "bombshell" in the next 2-4 years?
this bombshell, they expect, would cause maybe 20, 30, even 50% of the jws to leave.
it has been speculated here, and i tend to agree, that the society would rather have 3 or 4 million fiercely loyal adherents than the current mix of 7 million or so zealots, lukewarm hangers-on, slackers, and inactive "ones".. seeing a precipitous drop in the number of publishers in a short period of time would have a devastating effect on morale for even those most-rabid zealots.
That's a provocative idea. Certainly anything is possible. It would take a tremendous doctrinal shift to shake out 20-50% of the JWs, though. I think that if there was a youtube video of the GB praying the Rosary then most JWs would view it as a test of faith and stay in the religion...
Here's another idea. What if the GB really believes that the great tribulation is right around the corner? If that's the case, then they fully expect the U.N. and the world governments to come after the Witnesses with a vengeance. Perhaps they think that keeping the membership numbers secret may make it easier for the Witnesses to "go underground." They may reason this way: "if the governments don't know how many JWs are out there, then they will have a more difficult time finding us."
if you grew up a jw, did you always know you weren't going to be one when you grew up?
did you ever have that spark?
i don't think i always knew i wouldn't be one.
No. I remember having a conversation with a close friend about a little more than a year ago. We were complaining about something JW-related. He said "well if somebody could show me something better, I'd leave." I thought about it for a minute and said "Not me. It's not worth the trouble."
jws say everything they believe is based on the bible.
so name a jw belief that can't be proven using a bible alone and no wt publications.
i'll start with a hint... one of them has to do with the year 1919..
Who was the FDS that gave C.T. Russell his food at the proper time?
In the January 15, 1975 Watchtower on pages 46-47, it is explained thusly:
“Jesus Christ is head of the congregation, his slave, and his words show that he would strengthen them to feed his "domestics" right down through the centuries. Apparently one generation of the "slave" class fed the succeeding generation thereof as well as continuing to feed themselves.
We see then that Jesus Christ called attention to this method of feeding his people not as isolated, independent individuals, but as a close-knit body of Christians having real love and care for one another.”
According to the above-described doctrine, there had to be a chain of FDS from 33 C.E. down to C.T. Russell's time. Thus, C.T. Russell should have simply associated with the FDS of that time and kept right on truckin'...but that's not how it happened...
Compare this with how the Watchtower publication “God’s Kingdom of 1000 Years Has Approached” pages 185-186 describes Charles’ Russell’s Bible study method:
“Thirty years later found a small group of men, not associated with the Adventists or affiliated with any of the religious sects of Christendom, studying the Holy Scriptures at Pittsburgh (Allegheny) Pennsylvania, U.S.A. They studied independently so as to avoid looking at the Bible through sectarian spectacles.”
i was just thinking of a some of the scriptures that really bothered me when i was a witness.
one of them was exodus 34:6" "and jehovah went passing before his face declaring: "jehovah jehovah a god merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in loving-kindness and truth".
to me this made god look like a little kid with an out of control ego.
I always thought it would be a lot simpler if the parable of the rich man and Lazarus wasn't in the Bible. I can see why people read that parable and think he's talking about a burning hell. And the JWs' explanation of the parable is convoluted and weak.
co is visiting this week and they stress not to miss a meeting during his stay.
you'd think god himself was in town.
what's the big deal?
Undercover is right on the money.
The C.O. visit is a way to re-invigorate the Rank 'n File into doing more in the ministry. Most of the congregation will show up for Saturday service, and some JWs who work full-time will take a day (or half-day) off to go in service with the C.O. This is especially prevalent among men jockeying for promotions (MS/elder/service committee/assembly speaker/etc...).
Looking at it from the outside, it's funny how excited JWs get about the C.O. visit. I think it's a result of how painfully boring the JW experience is. Really, anything to break the monotony is welcomed.
i had the #4 talk tonite on 2nd peter-why beneficial.
i talked about you mean ol' postates.
i used 2pet 2:1-3 and even said the internet was a tool of satan to snare christians today.
Congrats on the "G", dude! Brings back memories for me. Man, I used to OWN the ministry school. I started when I was 5 years old and NEVER got a "W" for over 20 years...until one day a friend of mine became school overseer and gave me a "W" just because he could. He actually told me after the meeting that if anybody else in the hall had given my talk, he wouldn't have given them a "W." But he knew that I had never gotten one before and he just thought it would be good for me. We had a good laugh, but I was sort of pissed that my streak had ended.
some may have seen this tid-bit being passed around in certain jw email circles.
a "deeply concerned" jw relative (who knows i have soured on the whole jw thing) emailed this to me in hopes that it would improve my attitude.
at first i was just going to thank them for their concern and for the "encourgaging" email, but then i decided i must respond to this.
I've got to bump this thread. Excellent response by bud. Any reply by the JW who sent the original email?
looking back i don't think i really ever had any good friends being witness, cause if i would have some out of all those people and so called friends i thought i had, you would think one of them would have looked me up over the years.
what a farce.
Absolutely not. Years before I began questioning doctrine, I realized that the whole "brotherhood" line was a bunch of garbage.
so much for worldwide coverage of the latest tract campaign that ended on nov 16.
("would you like to know the truth?
") our service overseer announced last night on the local needs part that our cong.
Well I'm proud to say that, for the first time in my "theocratic" life, I had no part in the tract campaign!
And bud2114, you have a pm.
